After Autumn is based on the all-interval tetrachord borrowed from the first line of the chorus of the popular jazz standard Autumn Leaves, composed by Joseph Kosma. Although it has departed from the jazz idiom, the pitch material is derived from jazz harmonies, and the vast spaciousness of the piano wring also invites a certain improvisatory quality.
